The metrics chapter of this YouTube Analytics Guide breaks down the numbers creators check most often in Studio.
Views
Counts how often people started playback. Strong for diagnosing packaging (title/thumbnail) plus topic appeal—pair with traffic sources for context.
Watch time
Measures total minutes watched. For many channels, increasing meaningful watch time tracks closer to algorithmic satisfaction than raw view counts alone.
Subscribers
Net audience growth over a period. Useful, but combine with returning viewers and membership-style interaction to avoid empty vanity growth.
Impressions and CTR
Impressions estimate how often thumbnails were shown; click-through rate (CTR) estimates how often those impressions became clicks. Improve CTR responsibly—avoid clickbait that tanks retention.
Audience retention
Shows where viewers keep watching versus leave. Shape intros, pacing, and segments using the largest early drop-offs.
Traffic sources
Tells you if viewers arrive from search, suggested videos, external sites, or Shorts feeds. Strategy differs per source—do not optimize everything for a single source unless your data proves it is stable.
