Claude Max is Anthropic’s individual subscription for people who already live in Claude and keep running into the Pro allowance. It has two monthly tiers: Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200. Both include everything in Pro, with a larger five-hour session budget, a larger weekly cap, higher output limits, and priority access when traffic is heavy.
This guide follows Anthropic’s help article What is the Max plan? and the live Max pricing page. Dollar amounts and model rows below match those pages as of October 2026. Recheck them before you pay. Anthropic can change price and plans at its discretion.
Quick Verdict
| Point | Take |
|---|---|
| Best for | All-day Claude use, especially Claude Code and long working sessions |
| Not best for | Light chat, shared team admin, or jobs that should be billed per token |
| Price | Max 5x $100/month, Max 20x $200/month, monthly only |
| Usage | 5x or 20x Pro per five-hour session, plus a weekly cap across models |
| Stay on Pro if | A normal week fits inside the $20 plan, or $17/month billed annually |

Buy Max when the five-hour reset or the weekly cap stops work you would otherwise finish the same day. A single busy afternoon is a weak reason to multiply the bill.
What Is the Claude Max Plan?
Max is a paid plan for one person. Anthropic built it for people who collaborate with Claude often and need more usage across many kinds of tasks. It also includes priority access to new models, features, and products.
It is not a Team or Enterprise seat. Shared billing, SSO, and admin controls live on those organization plans. An ad that says “Claude Max for your team” usually means one Max seat per person, or it is pointing you at Team.
Max sits on top of Pro. You keep the paid workspace: Claude Code, projects, research, Claude Design, Slides, Docs, Claude Science, connectors, memory, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. The change is how much of that workspace you can use before a limit lands.
Anthropic’s help article lists the benefits this way:
- More usage capacity: 5x or 20x the Pro allowance, depending on the tier.
- Fewer interruptions during deeper work.
- Two tiers, so the allowance can move with the workload.
- Priority access to new models, features, and products.
- Claude Code on the same subscription as chat.
- Room for longer multi-step work, such as reports, spreadsheets, and presentations that continue in the background.
The pricing page states two of those points in plainer product language: higher output limits for tasks, and priority access at high-traffic times. Early access to advanced features is the same promise as being among the first to try what ships next.
Claude Max Price
Web prices published by Anthropic:
| Plan | Price | Session usage | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Everyday questions | None |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month on an annual plan ($200 up front) | At least 5x Free per five-hour session | Monthly or annual |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5x Pro per five-hour session | Monthly only |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20x Pro per five-hour session | Monthly only |
Details that paid-search pages often skip:
- The $100 and $200 figures are web prices. App Store and Google Play prices can differ.
- Tax is not included.
- Max has no annual discount. Annual billing exists for Pro and Team.
- There is no standing coupon, student price, or support-issued discount for Max 5x or Max 20x. Anthropic sometimes runs short promotions and announces them on official channels. Anyone in a supported country can still use free Claude at claude.ai.
The unit math is straightforward. Max 5x costs five times monthly Pro and includes five times the session allowance, so you are buying capacity at a similar rate, not a bulk discount. Max 20x costs twice Max 5x and includes four times the session multiplier (20x versus 5x). If you use that headroom, the $200 tier is the cheaper unit. If you do not, you are paying for allowance that sits idle.
Usage Limits
Every plan has a limit that resets on a rolling five-hour window. Paid plans add a weekly limit. Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count or a token quota for Max. A short question and a long Claude Code run do not draw the same amount. Usage depends on conversation length, the model, and the features you turn on.
Anthropic defines the two tiers like this:
- Max 5x is five times Pro’s per-session allowance. It is aimed at frequent use across a mix of tasks.
- Max 20x is twenty times Pro’s per-session allowance. It is aimed at daily use on most tasks.
The five-hour window refills on a rolling basis. The weekly limit applies across models and resets at a fixed day and time assigned to the account. That clock does not move when the subscription starts or when the first message goes out. The next reset is in Settings > Usage, and each cycle restores the full weekly allowance.
Web, desktop, iOS, Android, and Claude Code share one pool. A heavy morning in the terminal is what can empty the chat budget later the same day.
Anthropic also says it may apply other weekly or monthly caps, or limits on particular models and features, so access stays fair. On the public comparison table, Fable on Max 5x and Max 20x is listed as 50% of weekly limits, while Pro reaches Fable through usage credits. Treat that row as current plan copy and read the pricing table again before you assume a model is fully included.
When a limit hits, the choices on a paid plan are to wait for the reset, move up a tier, or turn on usage credits and continue at standard API rates. Anthropic also documents separate limit resets that can refill the five-hour window or the weekly allowance back to full. Those are an extra control, not a second hidden subscription.
Max 5x or Max 20x?
The search that shows up next to the price ads is “$100 vs $200” and “which plan for Claude Code.” The feature list does not split. Both tiers get higher output limits, early access, and priority when traffic is high. The allowance is the product difference.
Max 5x fits when:
- Pro’s five-hour window runs out during a normal working day, more than once or twice a week.
- Claude Code is a daily tool, used in one focused session rather than several terminals at once.
- You can keep a smaller model on routine edits and spend the larger models on the hard parts.
Max 20x fits when:
- The weekly cap on Max 5x arrives before the week is over, even though each five-hour window looked fine.
- You keep parallel Claude Code sessions, long agent loops, or large-repo work going most days.
- An interrupted session costs more than the extra $100.
Stay on Pro when Settings > Usage shows the week finishing with room left. The pricing page’s own description of Max is for people who work with Claude throughout the day and want longer uninterrupted sessions.
Claude Max vs Pro
Pro is the everyday paid plan. At $20 a month, or $17 a month when you pay $200 for the year, it includes Claude Code and the rest of the paid workspace, with at least five times the free plan’s usage per five-hour session.
Max is that same workspace with a larger meter. It does not unlock a separate Max-only app. It unlocks more of the same work, plus the output-limit, early-access, and high-traffic priority benefits above.
Upgrade when one of these is already true:
- The session limit lands in the middle of a coding or research block.
- The weekly cap arrives before Friday, even when individual sessions seemed fine.
- You want first access when a new model or feature ships.
- Multi-step documents, spreadsheets, and presentations need to keep running instead of stopping early.
Skip Max when:
- The usage chart rarely approaches the Pro line.
- You need seats, SSO, domain controls, audit logs, or one invoice for a company. That is Team or Enterprise.
- The workload is a product or an unattended job. API billing is the cleaner meter for that.
Claude Code on the Max Plan
Claude Code is included on every paid plan, including Pro. Max does not turn the terminal on. Max changes how long you can stay in it.
Terminal work and claude.ai chats draw from the same allowance. Spend the morning in Claude Code and the afternoon chat budget is smaller. For bursts past the included limit, a Console account can put that extra work on pay-as-you-go API credits.
A ladder that matches how people actually shop this:
- Start on Pro when Claude Code is occasional or the repository is small.
- Move to Max 5x when a normal day hits the rate limit.
- Move to Max 20x when the weekly cap, or several sessions at once, is what stops the work.
- Use the API when Claude is a service you run, not a person at the keyboard.
When the API Costs Less Than Max
Max is a seat for a person. The API is a meter for software.
The subscription is the better buy when one person mixes chat, files, research, and Claude Code and stays inside the five-hour and weekly limits. The bill is flat for the month.
The API is the better buy when:
- Claude runs inside your own product.
- Jobs are automated, overnight, or highly parallel. A weekly cap is a poor fit for that shape of work.
- You want batch pricing, prompt caching, or a specific model’s token rate.
- Usage credits on Max would send the overage to the same API rates anyway.
API rates move with the model. On the pricing page, Fable 5 is listed at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Opus-class models on that page are priced below that. Those numbers are API rates. Anthropic does not publish how many tokens a Max week contains, so do not convert $100 or $200 into a guaranteed token bucket.
Billing, Upgrades, and Cancellations
Max is a monthly card subscription on the web.
- An upgrade from a lower tier is prorated for the rest of the current cycle, and the new limits apply right away. Unused time on the old plan is credited so the same days are not billed twice.
- Moving from annual Pro to Max can leave account credit when the unused Pro balance is larger than the Max charge. That credit applies to later subscription costs. The help article requires the Max billing address to match the previous subscription. If the address changed, cancel Pro, wait until that subscription ends, then start Max with the new address.
- A Google Play upgrade charges the full price of the new plan. Unused value on the old plan becomes extra days, so the renewal date lands later than a clean month.
- A downgrade takes effect at the end of the current period. Chats, projects, and files stay on the account.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge. On the web or desktop app, use Settings > Billing. App Store and Google Play subscriptions cancel in that store.
- Payments are generally non-refundable, except where the consumer terms or local law require otherwise. In the EEA and the UK, the 14-day withdrawal window is requested in the app.
Max Compared with Team and Enterprise
Max is one person. The plan comparison marks project sharing, SSO, central billing, SCIM, audit logs, and HIPAA controls as unavailable on Max. Team is the per-seat plan when more than one person needs a shared organization. Enterprise adds usage billed at API rates plus the admin and compliance surface, and it is sold as an annual plan.
If the buyer is a company, compare Team and Enterprise on claude.com/pricing before stacking individual Max seats.
Questions People Ask Before They Pay
Is there a Claude Max discount or free trial?
Anthropic does not offer a standing discount on Max 5x or Max 20x, and support cannot create a one-off coupon. Short promotions, when they exist, are announced on official channels. Free Claude at claude.ai is the no-cost way to try the product.
Does Max include Claude Code?
Yes. Pro includes it too. Code and chat share one usage pool. Pick Max when that pool is too small, not because the terminal is locked.
How often do Claude Max limits reset?
The session allowance resets on a rolling five-hour window. The weekly allowance resets at a fixed time on the account. Both show up in Settings > Usage.
Can you pay for Claude Max yearly?
No. Annual billing is for Pro and Team. Max stays monthly, so $100 and $200 are the actual monthly prices.
What happens if you upgrade from Pro mid-cycle?
The higher plan starts immediately. Unused time on Pro is credited. If an annual Pro balance is larger than one Max period, the extra is stored as account credit for later charges. The billing-address rule above still applies.
Is Claude Max worth $200?
It is worth $200 when Max 5x’s weekly cap is already blocking work. That tier is four times the session allowance of the $100 plan for twice the price. It fits all-day Claude Code. It is an expensive plan for occasional chat.
After the Writing, If You Still Need the Video
Max is a seat for chat, code, research, and documents. It does not render the finished video. When the next step is a product clip, an ad, or a social cut, Van Gogh Studio is the production workspace: text-to-video, image-to-video, and a large model library in one place, with free credits on signup.
