Auto dealerships live on video. Walkarounds, test drives, and feature highlights are the bread and butter of social media and website content. But there's a problem: those clips are often too short to tell the full story. A 5-second clip of a car's interior doesn't give buyers enough time to appreciate the leather seats or the infotainment system. You need a longer video, but you don't have time to reshoot or edit for hours.

The solution is video extension. Instead of starting from scratch, you can take your existing short clips and extend them seamlessly, keeping the motion and context intact. With Van Gogh Studio (FreeVideoGenerator), you can do this in under 10 minutes—no credit card required to start. Here's how.

Why Extend Instead of Reshoot?

Reshooting a car video means setting up the camera, finding the right lighting, and coordinating with the sales team. That's time you don't have. Extending your existing footage is faster and cheaper. You keep the original clip's quality and simply add more frames that match the motion. This is especially useful for:

Walkaround videos: Extend a 10-second walkaround to 30 seconds so viewers can see every angle.
Feature highlights: Turn a quick shot of the dashboard into a longer, more detailed view.
Test drive clips: Stretch a short acceleration shot into a more immersive experience.

Step-by-Step: Extend Your Car Video in Under 10 Minutes

Here's the exact workflow using Van Gogh Studio's Video Extend feature. It's designed to be fast and intuitive.

Step 1: Upload Your Short Clip

Go to the Video Extend tool and upload your car video. The tool accepts common formats like MP4 and MOV. Make sure your clip is at least a few seconds long—the tool works best with a clear subject and consistent motion.

Step 2: Set Your Extension Parameters

Once uploaded, you'll see options to control the extension. You can specify how long you want the final video to be, or let the AI decide based on the content. For a dealership, you might want to extend a 5-second clip to 15 or 20 seconds. The tool uses AI to predict the next frames, so the longer you extend, the more creative the AI gets. Stick to a reasonable extension (e.g., 2x to 4x the original length) for best results.

Step 3: Choose the Model and Settings

Van Gogh Studio gives you access to multiple AI models (like Kling, Sora 2, Veo 3.1, and more). For video extend, you'll want a model that handles motion well. The platform's model selector shows you which models are available for this feature. If you're unsure, start with the default recommendation. You can also adjust resolution and aspect ratio, but for social media, 1080p is usually fine.

Step 4: Generate and Review

Click the generate button. The AI will process your clip and produce an extended version. This usually takes a few minutes, depending on the length and model. Once done, preview the result. Check for smooth transitions and consistent motion. If it looks good, download it. If not, tweak the parameters and try again.

Step 5: Enhance Further (Optional)

If you want to polish the extended video, use the Video Upscaler to improve resolution and clarity. This is especially useful if your original clip was low-res. You can also add effects or motion control in the AI Video Studio to make the video more engaging.

Reusable Prompts and Parameter Tips

While Video Extend doesn't require text prompts, you can guide the AI by choosing the right settings. Here are some tips:

For a smooth walkaround: Extend in small increments (e.g., 2x) to maintain motion continuity. The AI is better at predicting short extensions.
For a dramatic reveal: Extend a slow pan across the car's front. The AI will continue the pan smoothly if you keep the extension modest.
For test drive footage: Extend the clip while the car is moving. The AI will generate frames that match the speed and direction.

If you're using other features like text-to-video, you can craft prompts like: "A red SUV driving on a highway, camera following from behind, smooth motion, daylight." But for extend, the key is the source clip.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Overextending: Extending a 3-second clip to 30 seconds will likely produce artifacts or weird motion. Keep extensions reasonable.
Ignoring the source quality: If your original clip is blurry or shaky, the extended version will be too. Use a stable, high-quality source.
Not checking the model availability: Some models may not support video extend. Always check the live model selector in the tool.
Forgetting to preview: Always preview the result before downloading. The AI is smart, but it's not perfect.

Van Gogh Studio offers more than just video extend. Here are three tools that pair well with your workflow:

Video Upscaler: Enhance the resolution of your extended videos for crisp, professional quality.
AI Video Studio: Add effects, transitions, and motion control to make your car videos stand out.
Motion Control: Fine-tune camera movements in your videos for a cinematic feel.
