App install ads live or die in the first three seconds. If the hook doesn't stop the scroll, the rest of the creative doesn't matter. But producing enough UGC-style videos to test hooks is expensive and slow when you rely on creators. That's where AI-generated UGC ads come in.

In this guide, I'll show you a practical workflow for creating app promo videos with proven hook formulas, using Van Gogh Studio's UGC Ad Video feature. You'll learn the exact steps, get reusable prompts, and avoid common pitfalls.

UGC (user-generated content) ads feel authentic because they mimic real people sharing their experiences. For app promos, this format builds trust and relatability. Instead of a polished brand spot, you show a "real" user demonstrating the app's value.

But hiring creators for every hook variation is impractical. AI tools let you generate multiple UGC-style videos quickly, so you can test different hooks and double down on what works.

Comparing Approaches: Creator vs. AI-Generated UGC

Traditional UGC production involves scripting, hiring, filming, and editing. It's high quality but slow and expensive. AI-generated UGC, on the other hand, offers speed and scalability. You can produce dozens of variations in the time it takes to shoot one video.

While AI-generated UGC may lack the nuance of a human performance, it's perfect for testing hook formulas and iterating on messaging. For app promo, where speed is critical, AI is a strong choice.

Step-by-Step Workflow with Van Gogh Studio's UGC Ad Video

Step 1: Define Your Hook Formula

Before you generate anything, decide which hook formula you want to test. Common formulas for app promo include:

Problem Agitation: "Tired of [problem]? This app fixes it."
Curiosity Gap: "I found this app that does [surprising thing]."
Social Proof: "Everyone's talking about this app, so I tried it."
Direct Benefit: "This app saves me [time/money] every day."

Choose one formula for each video you generate. This keeps your testing clean.

Step 2: Write a Script That Fits the Formula

Write a short script (15-30 seconds) that follows your chosen hook. Keep it conversational, as if a friend is speaking. For example, for a productivity app, a problem agitation script might be:

"I was drowning in tasks until I found this app. Now I plan my whole week in minutes. It's a game changer."

Step 3: Generate the UGC Video

Go to the UGC Ad Video page on Van Gogh Studio. You'll see options to input your script and select a presenter avatar. Choose an avatar that matches your target audience (e.g., young professional, student).

Paste your script and select the aspect ratio (9:16 for stories/reels, 1:1 for feed). Then generate. The tool will create a video of the avatar speaking your script.

Step 4: Add Visuals and Text Overlays

Once you have the base video, use the AI Video Studio to add overlays, captions, and effects. For app promo, you'll want to show the app interface. You can use the Link to Video feature to turn your app's product page URL into a video clip that you can overlay.

Step 5: Edit and Export

Trim the video to the ideal length (usually 15-30 seconds). Add background music if needed. Then export in high resolution. Van Gogh Studio's upscaler can enhance the final output.

Reusable Prompts and Parameter Tips

When writing scripts for UGC ads, use these prompt templates:

For a problem agitation hook: "[App name] solves [specific problem]. Here's how it works."
For a curiosity hook: "I never thought an app could [surprising benefit], but this one does."
For a social proof hook: "My friends won't stop using [app name], so I gave it a try."

Parameter tips:

Use 9:16 aspect ratio for TikTok/Reels, 1:1 for Facebook feed.
Keep the script under 50 words for a 15-second video.
Choose an avatar that matches your target demographic.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Ignoring the hook: Don't bury the hook in the middle. The first sentence must grab attention.
Overcomplicating the script: Keep it simple. One clear message per video.
Skipping text overlays: Many viewers watch without sound. Add captions.
Not testing variations: Generate multiple hooks and test them in ad platforms.

Link to Video: Turn your app's product URL into a video clip.
AI Video Studio: Edit and enhance your UGC ads with effects and motion control.
Video Effects: Add filters and transitions to make your ads pop.
